■ボルドーにおける99クリスマス嵐の影響について 2000/01/15

フランスでは先月の前後に嵐が暴れまくり大変なことになっていたのを各種報道のよりご存じの方も多いはず。 ぶどう畑への影響はあまり報道されなかったのですが、世界中のワイン関連のメーリングリストや BBSを探し、ボルドーのシャトー・オーナーであるジャン=ミッシェル・カーズからの手紙が流れてきましたのでここに転用いたします。
**サマリー**
とにかく広範囲にわたり、修復不可能で莫大な被害が出ています。海岸から続く、松林も見るからに”破壊されて”しまったようです。我々のご近所の方もひどい被害に遭われた方もいらっしゃいました。 例えばシャトー・ポン=カネ。まるで爆弾を受けたように、あのすばらしい杉の木が倒されていましたし、ルデンヌの敷地にある数件の屋敷は倒れた木の下敷きになってました。カントメルルも同じくです。
あの、ラフィットのテラスにあった歴史的そして大きな杉の木も割れてしまい、以前の1/3の高さしかありません。 ただ、私が見る限りぶどう畑には影響はなかったようです。
私たちの建物も大きな被害をうけましたが、幸いなことに修理が簡単にできそうです。事実今回の嵐で一番の被害はたくさんの木が倒されてしまったことなのです。100年以上の立派な木がたった2時間の嵐で見事にやられてしまったのです。

The damages are impressive, but.....it could have been worse! That's what we thought when we saw the extensive, and sometimes irreparable damages, some our most unfortunate neighbors had to face. The pine forest near the ocean is practically destroyed. As regards the wine estates, and from what I saw, Pontet-Canet (the park looks like it was bombed, and most of the great cedar trees are down on the ground), Loudenne (which suffered extensive damage due to the fall of trees on several houses), Cantemerle, to name a few have been hit really hard. The beautiful and historical huge cedar on the terrace at Lafite is broken at 1/3 of its previous height, and may well be totally lost. However, as far as I know, the vineyards themselves did not suffer.In a nutshell, our buildings were seriously damaged, but they will be more or less easily repaired..... In fact, what is for us irreparable is the loss of a great number of our trees, which were often over a hundred of years old, and which had weathered a lot of blasts and thunderstorms. Two hours of a very strong wind broke down their resistance.

M. Cazes had much more in his email detailing the damage to his properties. If you don't know, over two million trees had been planted in the Bordeaux region to moderate the effects of the persistent wind off the ocean and protect the grape vines. The trees have all been destroyed, almost all two million are gone. Since these were in place to deflect the salt laden winds from the vines, only time will tell the long term result. It will be a monumental task to clean up all the storm debris and replant the trees. Since the vines are in their dormant stage and many have been pruned, the physical damage is light.
